Environment Agency

Government agency that from April 1996 took over the responsibilities of the National Rivers Authority, Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution, and local waste regulation authorities for England and Wales. Scotland has its own Scottish Environmental Protection Agency. The US equivalent is the federal government's independent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created in 1970 from other agencies. It coordinates research and monitoring and sets deadlines for companies to comply with US environmental standards.
