Sandoz

Pharmaceutical company whose plant in Basel, Switzerland, suffered an environmentally disastrous chemical fire in November 1986. Hundreds of tonnes of pesticides, including mercury-based fungicides, spilled into the River Rhine, rendering it lifeless for 100–200 km/60–120 mi and killing about half a million fish. In 1996 the company merged with Ciba-Geigy group to form Novartis.
