Epinal

Administrative centre of Vosges département, on the River Moselle at the foot of the Vosges mountains, France; population (1990) 39,500. Dating from the 10th century, the town is now a cotton-textile centre, and also produces metal goods and leather.

The church of St Maurice is partly 13th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries the town was known for its ‘Images of Epinal’, coloured pictures with patriotic or religious themes.
