prostacyclin

In medicine, a prostaglandin that is produced by the endothelial lining of the blood vessels. It inhibits the aggregation of platelets in the cardiovascular system and, consequently, the formation of blood clots. It is also a potent vasodilator, causing blood vessels to dilate.

Prostacyclin, either alone or in combination with heparin, is used to inhibit platelet aggregation in patients undergoing renal dialysis. It has to be given by continuous intravenous infusion because its half-life is only three minutes. Adverse effects include flushing, hypotension, and headache because of its activity as a vasodilator.
