Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Commission established by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It investigates possible employment discrimination based on race, sex, age, religion, or national origin. The EEOC has the power to initiate suits in the federal district courts.

The EEOC arranged the largest settlement for sexual harassment in US history in February 1998. Astra AB, the US subsidiary of a Swedish pharmaceutical company, agreed to pay employees $9.8 million to settle claims arising from their treatment at the company's US headquarters in Westboro, MA.
