feminism

Active belief in equal rights and opportunities for women; see women's movement.

Pioneer 19th-century feminists included Mary Wollstonecraft, Millicent Fawcett, and Emmeline Pankhurst in the UK; and Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in the USA. In the 20th century, Simone de Beauvoir, Betty Friedan, Kate Millett, Gloria Steinem, and Germaine Greer contributed to the globalization of feminist theory following World War II. In 1966 the National Organization for Women (NOW) was founded in New York.
