TransylvaniaMountainous area of central and northwestern Romania, bounded to the south by the Transylvanian Alps (an extension of the Carpathian Mountains). Formerly a principality, with its capital at Cluj-Napoca, it was part of Hungary from about 1000 until its people voted to unite with Romania 1918.
