Erebus, Mount

The world's southernmost active volcano, located on Ross Island, Antarctica; height 4,072 m/13,359 ft.

It contains a lake of molten lava, which scientists are investigating in the belief that it can provide a ‘window’ on to the magma beneath the Earth's crust.

It was reached by Captain James Clark Ross in 1841 and was named after one of the ships in the expedition.
