Erede, Alberto (1909-2001)

Italian conductor. He studied in Milan and with Weingartner and Fritz Busch; he was assistant to Busch at Glyndebourne from 1934 and conducted Figaro and Don Giovanni 1938-39. He returned in 1955 for Il barbiere di Siviglia. He gave many performances at the Cambridge Theatre, 1946-48, with the New London Opera Company, and was engaged at the New York Metropolitan Opera House 1950-55 (making his debut with Traviata). He conducted opera in Düsseldorf 1958-62 and in 1968 led Lohengrin at Bayreuth; he also led Otello for the Scottish Opera in 1975, and Boccanegra at Rome in 1988. He made many recordings of Italian opera.
