ergotamine

Alkaloid C33H35O5N5 administered to treat migraine. Isolated from ergot, a fungus that colonizes rye, it relieves symptoms by causing the cranial arteries to constrict. Its use is limited by severe side effects, including nausea and abdominal pain.

The following drugs are contraindicated with nelfinavir: simvastatin (Zocor), lovastatin (Mevacor), rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane), cisapride (Propulsid), midazolam (Versed), triazolam (Halcion), dihydroergotamine (DHE 45) and ergotamine (Cafergot).
Ergotamine is similar to the brain chemical called serotonin.
Treatments for migraine attack: Analgesics (aspirin, acetominophen, ibuprofen), ergotamine compounds (Cafergot, Midrin), sumatriptan (Imitrex), lidocaine, feverfew.
