Erice

Resort town in Trapani province, northwest Sicily, 6 km/4 mi east of Trapani, to which it is linked by a funicular railway; population (1993 est) 30,000. Erice is situated 750 m/2,460 ft above sea level. There are remains of an ancient shrine of Aphrodite, used by the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans.
