Eridanus

Sixth-largest constellation, which meanders from the celestial equator (see celestial sphere) deep into the southern hemisphere of the sky. Eridanus is represented as a river. Its brightest star is Achernar, a corruption of the Arabic for ‘the end of the river’.

In Greek mythology, the river into which Phaethon fell when struck down by Zeus.

Originally placed beyond the limits of the Greek world, it was later, by both Greek and Roman authors, identified with the Padus (Po).
