Erie County

County in west New York; area 2,709 sq km/1,046 sq mi; population (1990) 968,500. It is bounded to the northwest by the Niagara River; the Cattaraugus, Tonawanda, Buffalo, and Cayuga creeks flow through the county. Its administrative headquarters is Buffalo. It includes much of Buffalo's metropolitan area, notably the residential suburbs of Amherst and Lancaster, the town of Cheektowaga, the industrial city of Lackawanna, and the communities of Hamburg and West Seneca.

Erie County

County in northwest Pennsylvania; area 2,082 sq km/804 sq mi; population (1990) 275,600. It is bordered by Lake Erie to the northwest, the state of Ohio to the west, and the state of New York to the east and northeast. Its administrative headquarters is Erie, one of the state's leading ports and a manufacturing centre. Outside Erie, the county is largely agricultural, known especially for its grapes, apples, and cherries.
