Houdini, Harry (1874–1926)US escapologist and conjuror. He was renowned for his escapes from ropes and handcuffs, from trunks under water, from straitjackets, and from prison cells. Born in Budapest, he was the son of a rabbi. He wrote books and articles on magic and was deeply interested in spiritualism, and campaigned against fraudulent mindreaders and mediums.
