cotton grass

Any grasslike plant of a group belonging to the sedge family. White tufts cover the fruiting heads in midsummer; these break off and are carried long distances on the wind. Cotton grass is found in wet places throughout the Arctic and temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, most species growing in acid bogs. (Genus Eriophorum, family Cyperaceae.)
