Erlander, Tage Fritiof

Erlander, Tage Fritiof (1901-1985)

Swedish politician. Elected to parliament as a Social Democrat in 1933, he was minister without portfolio in the wartime coalition government from 1944, and was minister for ecclesiastical affairs when chosen to succeed Per Albin Hansson as party leader and prime minister in 1946. He made way for the younger Olof Palme in 1969.

Erlander became active in the Social Democratic Party while studying at the University of Lund. He was a moderate, and his brand of consensual government was dubbed ‘Harpsund democracy’ after his country estate, where he consulted with leaders in all walks of society.
