Erlangen

Industrial city in Bavaria, Germany, in the Regnitz Valley, 18 km/11 mi northwest of Nuremberg; population (2005 est) 103,200. It is a major centre for electrical engineering and telecommunications, and other industries include glass-making and brewing. It is the site of the Erlangen-Nuremberg University.

It has a castle (1704) and a baroque Rathaus (town hall). The Friedrich-Alexander University, founded in Bayreuth in 1742, was moved to Erlangen in 1743. The research headquarters of Siemens and other electrical engineering firms are here.
