Ernani

Opera by Giuseppe Verdi (libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on Victor Hugo's drama Hernani), first produced at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice, Italy, on 9 March 1844. It was the first of Verdi's operas to be produced outside Milan. It concerns the outlawed Ernani and Don Carlos, King of Spain, who are both in love with Elvira. Don Carlos becomes Holy Roman emperor, Ernani marries Elvira, and Silva (guardian and former fiancé of Elvira) gets revenge.
