Bevin, Ernest (1881-1951)British Labour politician. Chief creator of the Transport and General Workers' Union, he was its general secretary 1921-40. He served as minister of labour and national service 1940-45 in Winston Churchill's wartime coalition government, and organized the ‘Bevin boys’, chosen by ballot to work in the coalmines as war service.
