Ernest (I) the Pious (1601–1675)
| 1st Duke of Saxe-Gotha. He served in the Thirty Years War, and in 1640 won possession of the Duchy. He turned Gotha into a model state, with compulsory education for all, a small and early example of enlightened absolutism. |
