Ernster, Deszö (1898–1981)

Hungarian bass. He made his debut at Düsseldorf in 1925, and at Bayreuth in 1931. He toured the USA with the Salzburg Opera Guild 1938–39, and made his New York Metropolitan Opera House debut in 1946, as King Marke (which he played until 1963). He appeared as Hagen at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1949 and 1954, and at Glyndebourne in 1952 as Alfonso. In 1953 he appeared at Salzburg as the Commendatore, under Furtwängler. He sang in the first performance of Hindemith's Neues vom Tage at the Kroll Opera, Berlin, in 1929 (under Klemperer).
