| For nearly two millennia Christians (and Jews for that matter) understood the Song of Songs allegorically, but when a literal type of exegesis prevailed in the late nineteenth century, understanding the book as a series of erotic love poems, the spiritual understanding of the book was almost totally discarded. Each episode illustrates a different perspective on the DL, and each features a lengthy, erotic love scene between the two men involved. Benedict also strives to overcome the dualisms of soul and body, eros and agape, erotic love and self-giving love, to find a synthesis of the two in a love that is both self-giving and ecstatically mutual. |
