error detection

In computing, the techniques that enable a program to detect incorrect data. A common method is to add a check digit to important codes, such as account numbers and product codes. The digit is chosen so that the code conforms to a rule that the program can verify. Another technique involves calculating the sum (called the hash total) of each instance of a particular item of data, and storing it at the end of the data.

Automated error detection combines technologies of statistical pattern analysis, expert systems, and database verifications to provide an in-depth review of every policy at a low unit cost.
They need to develop a systems approach that would increase knowledge and incentives for error detection, reporting and prevention while protecting the public from unsafe practice.
When a computer receives a packet of information, it checks for errors by performing a calculation and comparing the result with the numerical value in the packet's header (see How TCP error detection works).
