Ervin, Sam(uel James), Jr (1896–1985)

US senator. In the Senate, he opposed civil rights legislation, supported the Vietnam War, and generally favoured conservative causes. He presided over the Watergate committee investigation (1973), giving impassioned speeches on the Constitution's restraints on the government.

He was born in Morganton, North Carolina and became an expert on constitutional law. He served in the US House of Representatives as a Democrat for North Carolina and as a judge before he went to the US Senate.
