Erzberger, Matthias

Erzberger, Matthias (1875–1921)

German politician. Long a hate figure for the German right, he first attracted controversy as an advocate of peace without annexations in 1917. Subsequently, as a member of the armistice delegation, he supported acceptance of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles despite fierce German opposition. He resigned in 1921 after an unsuccessful libel action against a political opponent, and was assassinated in August 1921.

Erzberger was a centre party deputy from 1903. Appointed as finance minister and vice premier in 1919, he drastically reformed the tax system and nationalized the German railways. He was killed in the Black Forest by members of the extremist group Organization Consul.
