Erzincan

Capital of Erzincan province, eastern Turkey, on the West Euphrates River, 150 km/94 mi southwest of Erzurum; population (1990) 91,800. Situated 1,200 m/3,937 ft above sea-level, the town lies in a basin of the mountainous central plateau of Anatolia. It is an agricultural centre, with a major trade in livestock. Industries include sugar-refining and the manufacture of cotton textiles. The region frequently experiences earthquakes; the town was devastated in 1939 (with a death toll of 10,000), and again in 1983.

During World War I Erzincan was taken by the Russians in July 1916.
