Es war einmal

Opera by Alexander von Zemlinsky (libretto by Drachmann), first produced at the Hofoper, Vienna, Austria, on 22 January 1900. The opera was conducted by Mahler, who assisted Zemlinsky in revising the work. It tells how a princess married to a gypsy fits the wedding dress offered by a mystery prince, her husband in disguise.
