escalation clause

Clause that provides for an increase in the price of a contractor's goods and/or services. Common in contracts delivered over a long period of time, an escalation clause protects the contractor against a general rise in costs especially in a climate of high inflation. The formula used for determining the increase in price is often predetermined and written in to the contract.
