escape sequence

In computing, string of characters sent to a device such as a modem to switch it from sending data to a state in which it can accept and act upon commands.

Most dial-up modems use the escape sequence patented by Hayes, which consists of three plus signs (+++) with a brief pause on either side to distinguish the characters from data.
