Eschwege

City in Hesse, Germany, on the River Werra, 40 km/25 mi southeast of Kassel; population (1995) 22,800. Its location in a relatively depressed area close to the border with the former country of East Germany led to the creation of several new industries, such as metallurgy and textiles, during the 1950s to provide local employment.
