Escondido

City in San Diego County, southwest California; population (2000) 133,600. It is located 48 km/30 mi north of San Diego, on Escondido Creek. It lies in a fertile valley surrounded, or hidden (escondido), by rolling hills. It is the processing and trade centre for a fruit and avocado growing area. The production of wine in California began here with 18th-century Spanish missionaries, and there are still local wineries. The city has a variety of light manufactures, but is primarily a booming residential community.

The San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic park, 8 km/5 mi to the east, is the site of a battle (6 December 1846) between US troops under Stephen Kearny and Californians of Spanish ancestry under Andrés Pico, in which the US forces were outmatched until Kit Carson managed to bring reinforcements from San Diego.
