Scunthorpe

Industrial town and administrative headquarters of North Lincolnshire, England, 39 km/24 mi west of Grimsby; population (2001) 72,750. It has one of Europe's largest iron and steel works, which has been greatly expanded with assistance from the European Union. Other industries include engineering, electronics, food processing, clothing, and furniture.

The first ironworks were opened here in 1864 and steelmaking began in 1890.
