Esher

Residential district in Surrey, England, 5 km/3 mi outside Greater London and near the River Mole; population (2001) 6,300. Esher has a Friends' (Quaker) Meeting House dating from 1797. Near the station in Esher is Sandown Park, the first enclosed racecourse in Britain (1875).

To the east of Esher lies Claremont, built by Robert Clive, governor of India, where the exiled French king Louis Philippe lived after his overthrow in 1848. The landscape gardens adjoining Claremont, containing a lake, a grotto, and a huge amphitheatre, are National Trust property.
