Stara Zagora

Town in Khaskovo region of central Bulgaria, south of the Shipka Pass through the Balkan Mountains; population (2001) 144,000. The chief industries are the production of chemicals and tobacco, and food processing. The town lies in a rose-growing area. Founded by the Romans, it became a major market centre under the Turks, and was ceded to Bulgaria 1877.
