Esopus

Town in Ulster County, southeast New York; population (1990) 8,900. It is situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, to the south of Kingston. Settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, it became a town in 1811. Esopus is the site of the Wiltwyck School for Boys, a detention facility. Naturalist John Burroughs (1837–1921) cultivated fruit trees and wrote on a farm near here. Villages in the vicinity of town include Port Ewen, Ulster Park, and West Park. There are several commercial vineyards.
