Espanola| Town in Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties, north New Mexico; population (2000) 9,700. It is situated on the Rio Grande, 32 km/20 mi north-northwest of Santa Fe. A ranching and farming community, it produces chillies and vegetables, timber, fruit, livestock, and wool. The nearby Los Alamos National Laboratory provides employment. The town is home to the Northern New Mexico Community College (1909). |

Espanola| Town in Sudbury District, central Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 5,500. It is situated on the Spanish River, to the north of Lake Huron and 68 km/42 mi west-southwest of Sudbury. It is essentially a company town for a pulp and paper milling concern that began operations in 1899. During World War II it served as a prisoner-of-war camp. Today it is the gateway to the Manitoulin Island tourist area. The surrounding region produces nickel, copper, and gold. |
