Espanola

Town in Sudbury District, central Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 5,500. It is situated on the Spanish River, to the north of Lake Huron and 68 km/42 mi west-southwest of Sudbury. It is essentially a company town for a pulp and paper milling concern that began operations in 1899. During World War II it served as a prisoner-of-war camp. Today it is the gateway to the Manitoulin Island tourist area. The surrounding region produces nickel, copper, and gold.
