| In the early 19th century, Spanish-Mexican settlers transformed this tradition into their devotion to the Lord of Esquipulas, a syncretic Guatemalan Christ figure whose leafy cross suggests the Mayan Tree of Life and whose veneration also involves pilgrimage and the use of sacred earth for healing. Now, of course there are a lot of amazing aspects to this legend because Nuestro Senor de Esquipulas was the black Christ of the far-off land of the converted Indians of Esquipulas, Guatemala, and how He got to the land of the Tewa is anybody's guess ``There is a lot of hope that foreign organizations will help us,'' said Ramon Roldan, a 60-year-old worker from the southern province of Esquipulas. |
