Essene

Member of an ancient Jewish religious sect located in the area near the Dead Sea c. 200 BCAD 200, whose members lived a life of denial and asceticism, as they believed that the day of judgement was imminent.

The Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered in 1947, are believed by some scholars to be the library of the community. John the Baptist may have been a member of the Essenes.
