Esslingen

City in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, 16 km/10 mi southeast of Stuttgart, on the River Neckar; population (1994) 489,500. Esslingen has electrical, automotive engineering, textile, and food industries.

Esslingen was founded in the 8th century. There are several old churches, including the Frauenkirche 1321–1516, a former Rathaus (town hall) with a Renaissance facade, and a baroque Rathaus (town hall).
