Essonne

Département in the Ile-de-France region of France, situated to the south of Paris; area 1,811 sq km/699 sq mi; population (1999 est) 1,134,200. The rivers Orge and Essonne flow through it, both tributaries of the Seine. Considerable woodland remains and agriculture is important. The département is crossed by major communications axes (Orly international airport is located here) and now functions as an outer suburb for Paris. Multinational companies producing electronic and electrical equipment are located here. The administrative centre is the new town of Evry, which contains the newest cathedral in France, opened in 1995.

Essonne was created in administrative reforms in 1964. Other chief towns are Corbeil-Essonnes and Etampes. The département covers parts of the ancient provinces of Hurepoix, Brie, and Beauce.
