estampida

An instrumental dance form of the 13th and 14th centuries, related to the troubadour/trouvère repertory. Its form consisted of several puncta (sections), each played twice, with first- and second-time endings, called ouvert and clos. Frequently the ouvert and clos endings, which often comprised the greater part of each punctum, were the same throughout the piece, resulting in a great deal of repetition.
