Este

Town in Veneto region, northeast Italy, 25 km/15 mi southwest of Padua; population (1991) 17,700. It has ramparts, a 14th-century castle, and a 17th-century cathedral. The House of Este, a princely family of patrons of the arts, took its name from the town. There are several museums and art galleries.

The Palazzo Schifanio (1385) houses the Civic Museum of Ancient Art; the Palazzo dei Diamenti (c. 1493) houses the National Gallery and Civic Gallery of Modern Art; the church of S Libera (15th century) houses the Civic Lapidary Museum; the Massari Palazzo (15th C) houses the ‘Giovanni Boldini’ Museum and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
