Estes Park

Town in Larimer County, north-central Colorado; population (1990) 3,200. It is situated on the Big Thompson River and Lake Estes, in the Rocky Mountains' Front Range, 42 km/26 mi north-northwest of Boulder. Estes Park adjoins Roosevelt National Forest and is the east entrance and headquarters for Rocky Mountain National Park. A tourist centre noted for its spectacular scenery, it is also headquarters for the Colorado–Big Thompson project, with two dams and power plants.

The town is near Hidden Valley Ski Area and Horseshoe Falls. It was settled c. 1860, and its first lodge was built in the 1870s.
