Estevan

Town in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada; population (1991) 10,200. It is located 201 km/125 mi southeast of Regina and 16 km/10 mi north of the US North Dakota border, on the Souris River. An oil and lignite coal centre. Other local products include clay, natural gas, and sodium sulfite. Estevan is also the trading point for an agricultural region engaged in mixed farming, dairying, and flour milling. Coal briquettes, brick, and tile are manufactured here. The town was the site of a bloody miners' strike in 1931.
