Estherville

Town and administrative headquarters of Emmett County, northwest Iowa; population (1998 est) 6,700. It is situated 11 km/7 mi south of the Minnesota state border, and 24 km/15 mi east of Spirit Lake. It is a regional trade centre, with meatpacking and other agriculturally based industries.

The town was settled in 1857. It was declared the county seat in 1859 but then had a long struggle with Swan Lake over the position and was elected as county seat again in 1882 when the courthouse was built. A second courthouse replaced it in 1958. Fort Defiance (1862) is southwest of the city. Sections of an 1879 meteorite that fell here are displayed in museums in Europe and the USA.

Estherville is home to Iowa Lakes Community College (1967).
