Etherege, George (c. 1635–1691)

English Restoration dramatist. His play Love in a Tub (1664) was the first attempt at the comedy of manners (a genre further developed by Congreve and Sheridan). Later plays include She Would If She Could (1668) and The Man of Mode, or Sir Fopling Flutter (1676). He was knighted by 1680.
