Etheridge, Melissa (1961– )

US pop singer. Known for her blues and folk-inspired music and raspy voice, she became one of the most popular pop artists of the 1990s. Her album Yes I Am (1993), featuring the hit singles ‘I'm the Only One’ and ‘Come to My Window’, sold more than 6 million copies in one year. She has won two Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocalist (1992 and 1994) and a 2007 Academy Award for her single ‘I Need to Wake Up’, the title song for the Al Gore film An Inconvenient Truth (2006).

Her self-titled debut album, featuring the hit single ‘Bring Me Some Water’, was released in 1988. Other albums include Brave and Crazy (1989), Never Enough (1992), Your Little Secret (1995), Breakdown (1999), and Skin (2001). The title Yes I Am was intended to be an affirmation of her homosexuality.
