Evander

In Roman mythology, the son of Hermes by the goddess Carmenta. He is described by Virgil as helping Aeneas against the Rutuli.

About 60 years before the Trojan War, he led a colony from Pallantion in Arcadia to Latium where he built the town of Pallanteum, subsequently part of Rome. He was supposed to have instituted the festival of Lupercalia, and to have taught the local inhabitants various arts of peace and social life.
