Eugene

City and administrative headquarters of Lane County, west-central Oregon, USA, 157 km/98 mi south of Portland, on the Willamette River; population (2000) 137,900. It is a processing and shipping centre for agricultural products from the surrounding region; wood products are also manufactured, and tourism is important. It is the home of the University of Oregon (1872), Northwest Christian College (1895), and Lane Community College (1965).

Eugene was first settled in 1846 and laid out in 1852; it developed as an agricultural and lumbering centre, and was incorporated in 1862. Tourists are drawn to such city attractions as the Hult Center for the Performing Arts, the University Museum of Art, and the Museum of National History. Eugene is also known for its annual Oregon Bach Festival.
